The story depending on which one you are reading or watching is very similar. It takes place in two places the first in the city and the second the country. This does not change in the film or play. There is nothing earnest about this play, at least on the surface. It’s a satire of the Victorian era, when an intricate code of behavior governed everything from communication to sexuality. The most important rules applied to marriage – always a popular topic in Victorian plays, and one that interested Wilde, who was married to a woman but sexually involved with men. (Shmoop)
The characters are very amusing. The lies the men tell to get woman and the women who over look the lies the men tell. The story over all is a funny one and in the end has a funny yet happy ending for all.
